When should you consider reinjecting juvederm in the lips?

Monday, July 6th, 2009

2 weeks is the most common time to do this and this is the time point that you should consider reinjecting juvederm in the lips. Sometimes if there is significant oozing and bruising during the procedure, the swelling may persist for greater than 2 weeks. So waiting a full month is another more conservative option in this setting. Generally 2 weeks is when I have patients come back to have either more filler injected or to have some of it taken out if there is augmentation that is not as desirable to get as perfect results that you can possibly get. Ultimately you should not notice any changes for about a week and know that the augmentation is stable before considering reinjected and this occurs usually about 2 weeks to a month.

Knowing the correct aesthetics makes a huge difference in the lips. The lips should really be the shape of the ideal eye in the reverse manner and the lower lips should match the eye the most. The upper lip should only by at most 1/2 an iris width high and 1 iris width wide. Although mathematical, the presentation to the person is very beautiful to the viewer.

Treating bruising to the lips after restylane?

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

This is a question that I answered for a patient who had restylane injections to the lips by another physician:

Prevention is the key to bruising and bleeding. You should always stop high dose vitamin E, anti-inflammatories, aspirin, herbal medication, supplements and any blood thinners 2 weeks before and after your injection or procedures.

These are elements that affect your body’s ability to clot your blood. Hence, if you are on these things during the time of your injection, you will have more of a chance for bleeding and bruising.

I also never suggest Arnica. I recently did a literature search and found that there is no scientific evidence to support Arnica’s ability to prevent bleeding and bruising. In fact, there were actually more evidence of adverse, or bad, effects from Arnica than good effects.

Genetics play a part and some people are just more prone to bruising.

In terms of the size or your lips, you can do something to correct that. The key here is to choose the right surgeon. You want someone that has a great understanding of facial aesthetics or what makes a face beautiful or not. I have discovered a theory on aesthetics that no one has been able to think of before. Our current theories, prior to my discoveries, have recently been found to be flawed.

If you are dissatisfied with the size and shape of your lips you can have an injection to reduce the size of it. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that can take away Restylane. But you have to go to a surgeon that has experience with it to have a successful outcome.

In terms of bruising, you can alternate warm and cold compresses to the bruised area to help with increasing circulation to the area of bruising.  This should be done after at least the first 48 hours.  The increased circulation could help take away the residual blood products and colored deposits that are left where the bruise is.  Also prudent exercise could also help the bruising.  Again prevention is the key!

Upper lip fuller on one side versus the other?

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

This is a question that I answered for a patient who had this procedure done by another doctor who had restylane injections to augment her lips.

Unevenness may be due to differential swelling. One side may have received more manipulation than the other side and has become more swollen. You should wait at least 2 weeks before doing anything drastic.

The ways to correct it are to add more to the side that has less or is smaller. Or you can take some out of the side that has more by injecting an enzyme to digest the Restylane. You should go to someone that has experience in doing this to have a successful result. Knowing aesthetics is also the key to getting a great result.

Radiesse good for lip augmentation?

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Radiesse is generally avoided in the lips due to the bumps and nodules that it can create. Restylane is the best in the lips. Juvederm can also be used in the lips as well. Both of these products have a limited longevity and can last from 6 months to a year.  Fat injections are an option in the lips but take a lot of experience and knowledge of lip anatomy and dynamics to create the best result.

Fat transfer, when done well, can last years. But you want to go to a surgeon that has experience doing these in the lips. The length of time fat lasts is tightly related to the technique that is being used. You have to traumatize the fat as little as possible and when you place the fat it has to be layered in small amounts so that the fat can survive and find its own blood supply and environment.

I refined an amazing volumizing procedure called “the YoungLift”.  This is an innovative technique that volumizes your face to bring out the younger and natural you without looking like you had something done.  This is not a facelift and requires no incisions.  Only pinpoint puncture sites are used and these heal imperceptibly.  The YoungLift can be done without general anesthesia and without drains, and large bandages.  You also have a lot less downtime and discomfort compared with traditional facelift procedures.  Dr Young employs the very best techniques from around the world into one volumizing procedure and he uses his internationally acclaimed understanding of facial beauty to create the youthful volume you once had. The YoungLift techniques can help with filling up the lips as well.  You can great results with fat injections in the lips.

How much does lip augmentation cost?

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Lip augmentation can be approached in a number of different ways and the costs vary. A lip lift entails an incision under your nose to lift the lips higher. The average for this ranges between 1k-2.5k give or take 1k.

Plumping up your lips with restylane usually entails 1-2 syringes, which ranges between 500-1000 give or take 100-200 dollars. Fat injections in the lips depends on how much you do but typically can range between 2-3k but lasts a lot longer than restylane and can achieve results that lasts 10 years or more depending on your health, genetics, how you care for it, etc.

Lip advancements are priced like lip lifts for most doctors. This entails making incisions in your mouth and advancing some of the lip in certain areas to plump up the lips to fit your desires. But all this depends on what region you are in and the personal pricing of the physician you see.

Desire to shape the top of the lip and how to do that

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

There are many options depending on how you really look.  Filling in your lip in a specific way can change the shape of your lip dramatically and can be done with fillers like restylane, juvederm and fat injections which can last years.  Directed removal of portions of your lip can help as well and this can be discussed when you talk with your surgeon.  Having a doctor with a keen sense of facial beauty is key.  I discovered a new theory on aesthetics that has made a significant impact on finding out the answers that we have all been looking for called the Circles of Prominence.

Options for lip enhancement

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

There are many options for lip enhancement / augmentation, including filling and surgical approaches. Filling up the lips is perhaps the best way to rejuvenate the lips.  Careful positioning of the filler substance within the lips will bring more youth to the lips and give it that sexy look. Fillers are a short term option and fat injections offer more long term correction.

Surgical procedures can remove small amounts of skin and can also be used to move around the substance of the lips inside your mouth to augment your lips in a beautiful way. But all of these mean nothing if your surgeon doesn’t have the right goals in mind.

Facial aesthetics or the understanding of facial beauty is essential for surgeons to formulate these goals that we reach for. In the lips, your upper lip should really never be too much bigger than 1/2 the height of the lower lip. Also, the pucker created by the lip should be a certain size in the upper and lower lips.

Lip augmentation can be done with fat injections as well.

Botox used to fill up the lips?

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Fillers like Restylane and Juvederm are really for filling up your lips. Botox can give a little element of filling by relaxing the lip muscles to allow them to volumize through the relaxation. But this effect is subtle. If you really want to volumize your lips, go with a filler. One thing you should know is that botox can again relax the lip muscles, but a benefit includes decreasing the lip lines through the muscle relaxation.

Fat injections are another option to fill up the lips and when done right can last for years.  Once the fat finds a blood supply it will live like normal tissue.  Technique is crucial.

Lip Implants and permanent solutions

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Fat injections would be a permanent type of implant and filler that could be your option.  They are natural, from your own body, take on the characteristics of the tissue that you inject them near, have less chance of reactions, and are not foreign. Depending on what you need exactly, other fillers can also help, including silicone implants that are placed around your mouth.

Silicone injections, however, are something that I would stay away from as they are hard to remove and once they’re in, they are permanent. I don’t do silicone injections and don’t plan on ever doing them. Other dermal fillers can improve your lips appearance but again, as you probably know, they are not permanent and last 6 months to a year.
