Is a browlift or blepharoplasty a better procedure for someone

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

It depends on where your eyebrow sits above your eye. Your eyebrow should sit above your eyelid margin about the size of the width of your iris. So depending on where your eyebrow sits, you will be a better candidate for an eyebrow lift or just an eyelift.

If your eyebrow sits below the distance of the width of your iris, you could benefit from an eyebrow lift. If it sits above this distance, an eyebrow lift could make you look surprised. That distance determines whether you look suprised or maybe more stern-looking or tired-looking.

If you elevate the eyebrow much more than the width of the iris you could have that surprised look. A little more than that distance is okay, but once you start approaching 1 1/2 times the distance of the iris, the suprised look takes on more prominence. After elevating your eyebrows, you are then more able to determine how much skin to take.

Many times volumizing the upper eyebrow area is the best way to rejuvenate the upper eyelid area.  This can be the best option to subtly elevate the eyebrows and volumize the upper eye for the best and most natural results. The YoungLift is a unique and amazing volumizing procedure using a person’s own tissues while avoiding incisions, general anesthesia, and the long recovery most of the time.

Excess skin between the eyes

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

This is a question that I answered for someone who had a procedure by another physician.

This extra skin is a consequence of reductive type of surgeries. When you age, you lose volume and this contributes to the extra skin. Upper eyelifts /null take away skin and that usually leaves skin elsewhere. It won’t end. A better way to rejuvenate the upper eyelids is to volumize the whole area. This will require fat grafting and on occassion facial implants.

The extra skin between your eyebrows is a normal part of aging that can be accentuated with reductive type of procedures. This area may need to be filled in to plump up the deflated state. This will fill in some of the wrinkles and excess. There are doctors out there that can think outside of the box to give people a more younger and natural appearance.  null is my exciting technique to volumize the face and its techniques can be used to fill in the area between the eyebrows, the forehead, and the temple area.

The cost of a browlift depends on the region of the country and the type of brow lift

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

The price of a brow lift depends on the region of the country where the surgeon is practicing, and also may depend on what is done during the brow lift.

There are different ways to approach the brow lift either by using endoscopes with or without large incisions or through a coronal incision that goes from ear to ear. Also, there are other minor ancillary procedures you can do to treat the muscles that cause wrinkling.

Generally, a browlift costs between $3500 to $5000 or more depending on what is going to be done and if any ancillary procedures are going to be added.

Question regarding one brow not moving after a browlift

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

This is directed to a question that I answered for a patient that had a browlift from another surgeon.  This person had problems moving one of her eyebrows after the procedure.

The nerves that innervate your eyebrow are very sensitive to pressure and stretching which can make them weaker for a time after a browlift. This happens to a lot of surgeons. Sometimes the muscles themselves can suffer trauma that makes them weaker.

Time is important. It could take up to 6 months or more for it to come back. The longer it takes, the greater the possibility of weakness in the nerve and muscle. I’m confident that it will come back though. Your body does amazing things. I would avoid steroids for this and I would eat a well balanced diet to insure that the nerves get nutrition to regenerate.

Can a “one-stitch” lift elevate the brows

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

When I think of the one stitch lift, I think of something that might be a quick fix to something that might need more than that.

Using one stitch to lift the face is like trying to build a house with one pillar for the foundation. The face and what it looks like cannot be naturally changed with one stitch.

If you were to use one stitch, it would likely make the face appear significantly abnormal. I have done over 1200 facelift and I know that using just one stitch would not allow the lifting process to pull a wide enough area to pull the face naturally.

Is a browlift or blepharoplasty a better procedure to do?

Another way to make the eyebrow and upper eyelid area look more youthful is by volumizing the whole area.  By replacing volume in the forehead and eyebrow area you can lift the eyebrows subtly and naturally while taking away the extra skin by filling it! Brow lift and Forehead lift are the same thing

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Browlifts and forehead lifts are the same terms for essentially the same procedure. Both describe elevating the eyebrows to a point that increases the aesthetics / beauty of the eyebrow / eye region to help with tired eyes and extra eyelid skin and drooping brows.

There are many ways to approach the brow lift. You can make an incision along the hairline, behind the hair, or in a forehead crease and the extent of each differs. Importantly, knowing exactly how much to pull up the eyebrows are essential for a great result. You may have seen results in the media of people who don’t look natural. You may have seen Joan Rivers, Pamela Anderson, etc. with brow lifts that leave them looking surprised. The reason for this is that our understanding of aesthetics is not solid at this point. We really don’t know how much the brow should be above the eyelid margin.

Brow Lift numbness may take a while and could be permanent

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

This is a question that I addressed for a person who had numbness after a browlift by another doctor. The old technique which required an incision above the eyebrows will cause a lot of numbness in the forehead and scalp area. This approach goes directly through these larger nerves to cause this numbness. To get the feeling back your nerves have to grow over all of the areas and sometimes this doesn’t come back fully. So this could be a permanent thing. Nerve grafting could be a possibility but would be a significant procedure and the results are variable. This option is a complicated approach. Time and waiting can eventually help to allow the nerves to grow back.

How does botox elevate your eyebrow?

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Botox Cosmetic weakens the muscle that pulls your eyebrows down. This allows your muscles that elevate your eyebrows to work with less inhibition. This is how the Botulinum Neurotoxin or a Botox brow lift works. Botox weakens the muscles between your eyes and around your eyes to allow the frontalis muscle to lift the eyebrows up more. It takes experience to do this but knowing where to put the botox can make a huge difference with the results. Dysport is a new product that works just like botox and has been shown by some to last longer and take less time to actually work.

Botox after a browlift?

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Browlifts can elevate the eyebrow and also can be used to treat the muscles so that they don’t work as well.  When the muscles don’t work as well, they are less likely to form wrinkles. It really depends on what indication you are using the Botox and where.  If its for wrinkles, you will still have them after a browlift but just less of them.

It also depends on where the wrinkles are located. If they are in between the eyes, then a browlift with muscle altering ancillary procedures can be incorporated to weaken the muscles in between your eyes and lessen the wrinkles from being recreated. If they are in your forehead then this is a little more difficult.

More recently, surgeons are leaving alone the muscle that lifts your brows. Doing so allows this muscle to elevate your brows and avoid the eyebrows from drooping into your eyes, which can give you a tired look.

Volumizing the forehead area can also help with improving the wrinkles.  It is like recreating the grape from a raisin.  Once the volume has been restored resurfacing can improve the area with the wrinkles that are still etched into the skin but has improved through the volumizing.  The YoungLift is a great way to volumize the face and forehead area to decrease wrinkles and create a more youthful appearance.

Consulting a board certified Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon would be something that I would highly recommend. We specialize in the face and neck so we are ideally suited to help you in this area.
